The Fourth Sunday of Easter
We have a Pope!! - God Bless & Keep Pope Leo XIV
Born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, our new Pope Leo XIV entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) in 1977 and made his solemn vows in 1981. After his ordination as a priest in 1982, He joined the Augustinian mission in Peru and served in Chulucanas from 1985 to 1986. He spent the year 1987 to 1988 in the United States as pastor for vocations and director of missions for the Augustinian Province of Chicago before returning to Peru where he spent the next ten years heading the Augustinian seminary in Trujillo and teaching canon law in the diocesan seminary, where he was also prefect of studies. He also served in other capacities there, including as a parish pastor, diocesan official, director of formation, seminary teacher, and judicial vicar.
In 1999, he returned to Chicago and was elected provincial prior of the Nuestra Señora de Buen Suceso province. In 2002, he was elected prior general of the Augustinian order and served two terms until 2013.
In 2014, he returned to Peru when Pope Francis appointed him apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo. He was elevated to Bishop of Chiclayo in 2015. While there, he also served as vice-president and member of the permanent council of the Peruvian Bishops’ Conference from 2018 to 2023.
He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Italian and has lived in the United States, Italy, and Peru in addition to his extensive travels as the head of the Augustinian religious order.
His Papal Motto is “In the One [Jesus Christ], we are one.”
From Fr Ryan
Our new Pope was a long shot! As they say, he was “often in the top 10, but never the top 5.” That means that we just don’t know what to expect. Rather than speculate blindly, I can say with confidence that I am cautiously optimistic. As an Augustinian serving as a pastor and bishop in Peru, certain of his political views are well known and mostly predictable. But his religious views are more complex. It’s not easy or useful to categorize his thinking as right or left. (I wrote an article on this recently on my blog FrHumphries.com/p/the-10-spectra-of-left-v-right-catholicism) And so, time will tell where his mind is on this or that topic. In the short term, though, Pope Leo is a man with a LOT of pastoral experience and a man of the world. He’s been all over the place and proven himself in a small parish, in a religious community, in a diocese, and in a world-wide religious community. He’s also earned the respect of his brother Cardinals and done a good job working in the Roman Curia.
That said, in this modern world, his record does have some question marks. He’s sparred with some American politicians on social media and some of his decisions in leadership have been questioned and will be further questioned now that he is the successor of St Peter.
Still, I remain optimistic. There is a special grace in being called to leadership in the Church. As Bishop Greco used to say, “there is a crown of thorns beneath the miter” (bishop’s hat). God can and does use us far beyond our natural capacity! That’s part of the adventure of following Jesus! In the meantime, let’s all pray for our new Pope and for all those who will assist him in these coming days and weeks!

Stewardship Paul and Barnabas encountered both violent rejection and joyful acceptance of the message that they preached. We, too, may meet with mixed reactions when we use our gifts in the service of God. But, the Gospel assures us, the reward for those who follow faithfully is eternal life.
